Ruby the Horse

|Joe Jarvis

Canada Day wouldn't be Canada Day without fireworks. The bane of most dog owners existence.

We have had dogs for more than 18 years. Everyone of them was scared of fireworks. The worst was our dog Ruby. A 130 pound Bull Mastiff.

We were all sitting around a camp fire at a friends place near the lake. Ruby and I were enjoying ourselves by the camp fire when unbeknownst to me the host was setting up fireworks right behind where we sat.

Ruby was calmly sitting at my feet when the first firework went off without warning. With a huge bang Ruby turned into a greyhound and shot off down the driveway.

I was quickly after her but if was night time and all I could follow was a large bouncing shadow. She was determined to find a safe place and luckily I saw her dart down a farmers driveway.

I was pretty sure I saw her dart into the barn so I followed and found her licking a horses nose. She was calm and the horses were all interested in her. She had never seen a horse to my knowledge so I let her nose around.

After the fireworks had subsided I was able to get a lead on her and start the trek back to the lake.

As we walked down the farmers driveway a vehicle approached. It was the farmer himself. He asked what I was doing there and I explained the situation. The smile on his face after I told him what had happened was priceless.
